Developing innovative solutions to reduce the environmental impact of brewing<\/span><\/h2>\n

CHEERS is a new biorefinery concept, inspired by nature\u2019s biodiversity (insect and microbial platforms), designed to sustainably and efficiently upgrade underutilized or waste secondary streams, such as bagasse, wastewater, CO2, and CH4 from bio-based industries, into innovative bio-based products.<\/p>\n

Proteinsecta collaborates in this project, which aims to help bio-based industries enhance raw material efficiency, overall sustainability, and competitiveness by recycling and cascading the biomass produced from their secondary streams.<\/p>\n

This pioneering initiative has launched two biological platforms: a microbial platform and an insect platform, with the involvement of PROTEINSECTA, AINIA, MAHOU SAN MIGUEL, and THUNDERFOODS.<\/p>\n

All value chains are based on new bioprocesses and\/or innovative biofermenters combined with sustainable downstream processes, which will be validated at demonstration scale in an industrial brewery. The project aims to achieve a 45% reduction in carbon footprint across each value chain. CHEERS\u2019 impact assessment will go beyond the traditional LCA approach, covering broader impacts such as biodiversity and land use. The brewing company MAHOU is the project coordinator and exploitation leader, working alongside 11 partners from 5 European countries, including technology providers, end users, and research entities.<\/p>\n

CHEERS will contribute to a \u201czero waste\u201d biorefinery approach, fully aligned with the EU Green Deal, the Circular Economy Action Plan, and the Bioeconomy Strategy, and will promote an understanding of biotechnology-based value chains by engaging key stakeholders, from small bio-based companies and large industries to consumers.<\/p>\n

La evaluaci\u00f3n de los impactos de CHEERS considerar\u00e1 ir m\u00e1s all\u00e1 del LCA cl\u00e1sico y cubrir\u00e1 impactos m\u00e1s amplios, como la biodiversidad y el uso de la tierra. La empresa cervecera MAHOU es coordinadora del proyecto y l\u00edder de explotaci\u00f3n junto con 11 socios de 5 pa\u00edses europeos, incluidos proveedores de tecnolog\u00eda, usuarios finales y entidades de investigaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n
